HERMANUS AND THE WHALE ROUTE

Situated on Walker Bay, approximately 120 km south-east of Cape Town, lies the charming seaside village of Hermanus. Most famous for the giant whales that come here to give birth in late winter, Hermanus has established itself as one of the continent’s most desirable tourist destinations. Known as a retreat of the rich and famous, there is much more to this bustling seaside resort than just whales. The journey from Cape Town to Hermanus takes you on a journey of great beauty and natural splendour, including spectacular views over the Cape Flats
and Somerset West as you cross Sir Lowry’s pass into the Overberg (literally meaning “over the mountain”). Rotary Drive, high above Hermanus, is sweeping views of Walker Bay and its pristine white beaches. This area, just above Hermanus is home to Africa’s southernmost vineyards and produces some of South Africa’s finest wines. Hermanus and the surrounding areas are also well known for their abundant floral diversity and awe-inspiring natural beauty while the village itself offers visitors a variety of excellent restaurants, comfortable lodgings and an interesting shopping experience. A return journey along the coastal route includes Clarens Drive with its world-famous ocean views.
