ROBBEN ISLAND –
WORLD HERITAGE SITE
Situated in Table Bay,
approximately 12 kilometres north of Cape Town,
Robben Island has over the years become synonymous
with the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.
Known as the "Alcatraz" of Cape Town,
this
former prison (and now a national monument), was
"home" to many of South
Africa’s freedom fighters, including Nelson
Mandela. Robben Island is now a
World Heritage Site. It has come to symbolise,
not only for South Africa, but
also for the entire world, the triumph of the
human spirit over enormous
hardship and adversity. The island also offers
sweeping views of Table
Mountain and the West Coast.
