CAPE POINT –
THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE NATURE RESERVE
Sir Francis Drake, the explorer,
called it"…the most stately thing and
the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference
of the earth", and today it is undoubtedly
one of the Cape's biggest attractions. The Cape
of Good Hope Nature Reserve at Cape Point is situated
approximately 60 km south-west of Cape Town on
the southernmost tip of the world-famous Cape
Peninsula. Flanked by the warm Indian Ocean on
the east and the cold Atlantic on the west, this
area is especially noted for its unique and abundant
floral diversity. Although the reserve is not
primarily a game reserve, animal lovers will not
be disappointed. Birdlife abounds and, with more
than 250 species on record, prospective birdwatchers
are in for a field day. The Reserve has a spectacular
but treacherous coastline – some 26 shipwrecks
have been recorded along its shores and several
offer excellent SCUBA diving opportunities. Cape
Point also boasts the highest sea cliffs in South
Africa and a funicular takes visitors 87 m up
to an old lighthouse. This lofty vantage point,
offers spectacular views of the place where the
two oceans meet.
